Overview
In this experience, you will discover the power of Etna in my city. I will tell you about the relationship between Etna and Catania, showing you the traces of an ancient lava flow (1669) that crossed the center of Catania and covered the sea for about 1 km. The main attractions or points of interest included in the experience are: Benedictine Monastery Roman Theatre Ursino Castle Bastion of Santa Croce Gammazita Well Church of San Nicolò Fish Market/Archi della Marina. This will be a true nature walk, where the main theme will not be the monuments of the city, but Etna and its eruptions. The meeting point will be in front of the Church of San Nicolò, and from there we will enter the courtyard of the Benedictine Monastery, one of the first places to be damaged by the eruption of 1669, of which important traces still remain today (3-meter-high lava blocks!). Then, we will reach the Roman Theatre, where I will tell you about the Amenano River, a river that is somewhat mysterious today as it is mostly underground. We will then move towards Ursino Castle, a castle that was almost entirely surrounded by the lava flow of 1669, and through some ancient paintings, I will show you how it originally appeared. We will move along internal alleys, always following the flow, until we reach the Hostel, where I will tell you about an incredible gem hidden there :)
Special notes
This activity is not suitable for individuals with physical issues, such as knee problems or respiratory issues. It is a walk recommended for anyone with a minimum of experience walking within an urban circuit. Comfortable, sporty, or athletic shoes are recommended.
