With over 2,700 years of history, the Norman Palace is the oldest royal residence in Europe. Home to the Norman kings, it hosted Frederick II and the Sicilian School of Poetry. Inside, the Palatine Chapel (1140) combines Byzantine mosaics, an Islamic muqarnas ceiling, and Romanesque marbles. Built in 1140 by the first king of Sicily, Roger of Altavilla, as a symbol of his power, it was described by Maupassant as 'the most beautiful church in the world', a masterpiece of artistic fusion. A must-see!
