Vue d'ensemble
Sintra has always been highly appreciated by kings and nobles, exalted by writers and poets, of which the unavoidable example is Lord Byron who called it a glorious Eden. Sintra has a rich collection of chalets and farms, some of which currently offer accommodation in Rural Tourism or Housing. Noteworthy are the palaces such as Pena, built during the romanticism period on one of the peaks of Serra, the Seteais, from the 18th century, now converted into an elegant Hotel, and the one of Monserrate, famous for its beautiful gardens that host unique exotic species in the country. Special mention deserves the Sintra sweets, namely the pillows and the famous cheeses which, according to references in old documents, were already made in the 12th century. Nearby, the beaches and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent, and Colares, which gives its name to a demarcated wine region, deserve special mention.
