Vue d'ensemble
The Mediterranean Mask Museum in Mamoiada showcases some of the main Mediterranean masks and those of the Barbaricino Carnival, featuring very evocative and well-curated representations. The main attraction is certainly an in-depth presentation of the mamuthones and issohadores of Mamoiada, their history and significance, and the main events in which they parade. Perda Pinta or Stele di Boeli (named after the area of the village) is a large granite slab, which is not actually a Menhir or a Stele, nor a monolith or Perda Longa, as evidenced by the part embedded in the ground that features concentric circles. This series of chapels or concentric engravings that characterize it makes it unique in Sardinia. Likely linked to fertility cults and the cycle of death and rebirth, typical of the spirituality of Neolithic agricultural communities. Or perhaps dedicated to the rites and thanks to the water-giving god, an essential source of life, and so abundant in the Mamoiada area.
